One of the pioneering wineries of Austria. Georg Schmelzer was applying ground quartz and herb teas to his vineyards around the town of Gols in Neuseidlersee decades before biodynamic practices had become widely recognized elsewhere in Europe. All vineyards are certified biodynamic and Weingut Schmelzer has a particular reputation for the quality of their Zweigelt which shows remarkable, crunchy fruit and fantastic purity. Georg is constantly striving for an honest, natural interpretation of native varieties and this shows in the wines. From Gruner Veltliner through to the critically acclaimed Zweigelt they are shining examples of how wine can be clean and correct as well as chemical free and honest without costing a small fortune.
